description Caernarfon Castle Overview
Polygonal towers and bands of contrasting stone give Caernarfon Castle a distinctive appearance among medieval fortresses in Wales. Edward I began its construction in 1283, and work continued into the fourteenth century. Built beside the River Seiont and linked with substantial town walls, it functioned as a fortress-palace and a center of royal administration during English rule in north Wales. Caernarfon belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering Edward I's castles and town walls in Gwynedd.
Its form is not the concentric arrangement of nested defensive circuits associated with Beaumaris. The castle interests architectural historians studying how defensive buildings also expressed royal power. Visitors exploring Welsh history can use its relationship with the town to understand how a castle served both military and administrative purposes.
