Aneto is a mountain located in the Spanish province of Huesca, within the Maladeta massif of the central Pyrenees. Standing at 3,404 meters, it is distinguished as the highest peak in the Pyrenees mountain range. The mountain features the largest glacier in the Pyrenees, covering a portion of its northern slopes. It was first successfully summited in 1842 by a Russian-led expedition led by Platon de Tchihatcheff and is a frequent destination for alpine mountaineers traversing the Pyrenean high routes.

What is the normal climbing route up Aneto?

The classic route commonly starts near La Besurta or the Renclusa refuge, crosses the Portillón Superior, and continues over the Aneto Glacier. The final obstacle is the narrow rocky section called the Paso de Mahoma before the 3,404-metre summit.

Do you need glacier equipment to climb Aneto?

The normal route crosses glaciated terrain, so crampons, an ice axe, and the knowledge to use them may be necessary even in summer. Conditions change as the Aneto Glacier retreats, making current advice from local guides more useful than an old route description.

What is the Paso de Mahoma on Aneto?

The Paso de Mahoma, or Muhammad's Bridge, is an exposed rocky ridge immediately before the summit. It is short, but the drops on either side can make it intimidating for climbers uncomfortable with exposure.
