description Balcones Escarpment Overview
The Balcones Escarpment is a long, discontinuous step in the landscape of central Texas produced by movement along the Balcones Fault Zone. It separates the higher Edwards Plateau on the west from the lower Coastal Plain on the east and southeast. Faulting and erosion expose thick limestone and help create springs, caves, canyons, and Hill Country terrain, including the belt around Austin and San Antonio. The escarpment is a topographic expression of a fault system, not a single straight cliff.
