Chiltern Escarpment

description Chiltern Escarpment Overview

The Chiltern Escarpment is the steep, northwest-facing chalk scarp along the western side of the Chiltern Hills in southeast England. It formed where Cretaceous chalk rises from the London Basin, creating a ridge above the adjacent clay vales, while the gentler dip slope descends toward the southeast. The landscape includes beech and other woodland, chalk grassland, farmland, dry valleys, and springs, and much of it lies within the Chilterns National Landscape.
