Blue Emperor

Anax imperator is one of Europe's largest dragonfly species, with a body length of approximately 7 to 8 centimeters and a wingspan reaching 10 to 12 centimeters. Its large size and powerful, patrolling flight make it a very conspicuous presence over ponds and lakes during summer.

Mature males develop a vivid bright blue abdomen marked with a dark central pattern, while the thorax is predominantly green. Females and immature individuals are generally greenish or brownish, lacking the striking blue coloring that gives the species its common English name.

The Blue Emperor is widely distributed across much of Europe, Africa, and western and central Asia. It breeds in still or slow-moving water bodies such as ponds, lakes, gravel pits, and canals, where males aggressively patrol territories.

Anax imperator was described in 1815 and remains one of the most recognizable and widely studied dragonfly species across its broad range. Its scientific name translates roughly to 'lord of the lords,' reflecting its imposing size and dominant behavior.
