Bouncing Bet

description Bouncing Bet Overview

Bouncing Bet, Saponaria officinalis, is a perennial herb in the pink family, Caryophyllaceae. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, it has opposite leaves and clusters of pink or white, five-petaled flowers that appear mainly in summer. The plant contains saponins, compounds that form a lather when the tissues are crushed and mixed with water. For this reason, its roots and foliage were historically used to make a mild natural soap, although the plant can be toxic if eaten in quantity.
