Bryde's Whale

description Bryde's Whale Overview

Bryde's whale is a large species of baleen whale belonging to the rorqual family, Balaenopteridae. Unlike many of its relatives, it prefers warm tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate waters, generally avoiding the colder polar seas. The species is characterized by three prominent longitudinal ridges on the top of its head, which distinguish it from the similar-looking sei whale that has only a single central ridge. It was named in honor of Johan Bryde, a Norwegian consul who helped establish early whaling operations in South Africa, though commercial hunting of this species was historically less intense than for other rorquals.
