Canterbury Plains

description Canterbury Plains Overview

The Canterbury Plains are broad alluvial lowlands on the eastern side of New Zealand's South Island. They were formed largely from sediments carried by rivers flowing from the Southern Alps and are among the country's main agricultural areas. Irrigated farming, sheep and dairy production, and grain cultivation are important land uses, while the plains extend between the Waimakariri River and the foothills of South Canterbury.
