help Castle Geyser FAQ
Where is Castle Geyser located?
Castle Geyser is located in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park, specifically in the state of Wyoming, USA. It sits just a short boardwalk hike away from the famous Old Faithful geyser.
How high does Castle Geyser erupt?
When Castle Geyser has a major eruption, the plume of boiling water can reach impressive heights of roughly 90 feet (27 meters) in the air. Following the water phase, it transitions into a loud, sustained steam phase that can last for 45 minutes or more.
How often does Castle Geyser erupt?
Unlike Old Faithful, Castle Geyser does not erupt on a strict, predictable clock, but it generally goes off every 10 to 12 hours. Because of its massive size, park rangers often predict its eruption window roughly a half-day in advance.
Why is it called Castle Geyser?
The geyser was named in the 1870s by the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition because of its massive, towering siliceous sinter cone. The large, crenellated deposits closely resemble the turrets and battlements of a medieval European castle.
