Chabahil Stupa

The Chabahil Stupa is an ancient Buddhist monument located in the Chabahil neighborhood of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. It sits prominently along an ancient trade route connecting Kathmandu to other parts of Asia.

The stupa is traditionally attributed to Charumati, the daughter of the great Indian Emperor Ashoka. Historical and oral traditions suggest she established a settlement and built the monument after arriving in the valley in ancient times.

Placing it among the oldest Buddhist monuments in the entire Kathmandu Valley, its construction dates back to the ancient period of Ashoka's expansion in the 3rd century BC. This makes it centuries older than many of the larger stupas in the region.

The Chabahil Stupa features a classic dome structure that closely resembles the famous nearby Boudhanath Stupa, though on a significantly smaller scale. It is surrounded by smaller votive chaityas, prayer wheels, and ancient stone carvings.
