Common Picture Wing

Also known as the Asian flutterer (Rhyothemis variegata), it features broad wings covered in conspicuous amber and dark brown patterned patches. The intricate wing coloration makes them easily recognizable as they flutter through the air.

This species is widely distributed across Asia, frequently found in countries like India, Japan, and Indonesia. They prefer slow-moving or stagnant water bodies, such as marshes, ponds, and lakes.

Unlike many fast, darting dragonfly species, the Common Picture Wing flies with a slower, butterfly-like fluttering motion. This unique flight pattern is why it is often referred to as a flutterer.

Both the adult dragonflies and their aquatic nymphs are strict carnivores. The adults hunt small flying insects, including mosquitoes and flies, directly out of the air.
