Deepor Beel

Deepor Beel is a permanent freshwater lake and marsh system located in the Kamrup metropolitan district of Assam, India, covering approximately 4,000 hectares. Designated as a Ramsar site in 2002, this wetland is recognized for its ecological significance as both a habitat for rare and endangered species and a wintering ground for migratory birds along the Central Asian Flyway. The beel (local term for lake) supports diverse fish species and provides resources for surrounding communities through fishing and agriculture. Despite its protected status, Deepor Beel faces ongoing threats from urban expansion, pollution, and invasive species affecting this ecologically sensitive wetland ecosystem.
