Dmitry Medvedev (born 1965) is a Russian politician who served as President of Russia from 2008 to 2012 and then as Prime Minister from 2012 to 2020, governing in a 'tandem' arrangement with Vladimir Putin. During his presidency the presidential term was extended to six years and Russia fought a brief war with Georgia. He has chaired the ruling United Russia party since 2012 and became Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council in 2020.
