help Duns Scotus FAQ

Why is Duns Scotus called the Subtle Doctor?

Duns Scotus earned the nickname Doctor Subtilis, or Subtle Doctor, because his arguments often make very fine distinctions. His discussions of individuation, univocity, and will became central parts of later scholastic philosophy.

What did Duns Scotus mean by the univocity of being?

Scotus argued that the word being can apply to God and creatures in a shared basic sense, even though God and creatures are radically different. This challenged Thomist approaches that leaned more heavily on analogy.

How did Duns Scotus influence the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception?

Scotus defended the idea that Mary could be preserved from original sin by the merits of Christ in advance. That argument became important for the later Catholic doctrine formally defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854.

Where did Duns Scotus teach and study?

Scotus was associated with major medieval university centers including Oxford and Paris. He was a Franciscan, and his intellectual career unfolded in the late 13th and early 14th centuries.
