Emperor Valerian

Valerian, full name Publius Licinius Valerianus, was Roman emperor from 253 to 260 and ruled jointly with his son Gallienus during the Crisis of the Third Century. He issued persecution edicts against Christians in 257–260, under which several prominent Christians were executed or exiled. In 260 he was captured by the Sasanian Persian king Shapur I at the Battle of Edessa, becoming the first Roman emperor seized alive by an enemy power, and he died in captivity.
