Fiordo Garibaldi

Fiordo Garibaldi is a fjord located in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in southern Chile. It sits entirely within the borders of Alberto de Agostini National Park, a highly remote and rugged wilderness area. It cuts inland from the Darwin Range and the Beagle Channel.

The Garibaldi Glacier is a massive, actively calving glacier that feeds directly into the waters of Fiordo Garibaldi. Because it sits in a temperate rainforest environment, it is surrounded by lush, green Magellanic forests rather than bare rock. The striking contrast of blue ice against the green forest makes it one of the most beautiful glaciers in South America.

Because there are no roads to the region, tourists primarily visit Fiordo Garibaldi via expedition cruises departing from Punta Arenas, Chile. Passengers often take small Zodiac boat tours to get close to the towering face of the Garibaldi Glacier. The fjord is a standard stop on cruises navigating the Beagle Channel and Cape Horn.

The fjord is unique because it represents a rare intersection of a freezing glacial environment and a sub-Antarctic rainforest. This creates a distinct ecosystem where cold-water marine life thrives alongside diverse, dense forests. Elephant seals, sea lions, and various species of penguins are commonly spotted in its waters.
