description Fort Mifflin Overview
Fort Mifflin is an eighteenth-century fortification on Mud Island in the Delaware River near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Built to control access to the river and the port, it played a major role in the American Revolutionary War when its garrison resisted a British siege in the autumn of 1777. The defense delayed British efforts to supply forces farther upriver and contributed to the protection of Philadelphia's river approaches. The surviving fort is preserved as a historic site.
