description Kaunas Castle Overview
Kaunas Castle is a medieval stone fortress in Kaunas, Lithuania, situated near the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. Archaeological evidence places its construction in the mid-fourteenth century, when the site helped defend the region against attacks by the Teutonic Order. The castle changed hands and was rebuilt during conflicts between Lithuanian rulers and the order. Only part of the original structure survives, and the remaining buildings now serve as a museum and cultural site.
