description Fort Frederica Overview
Fort Frederica was a British colonial settlement and fortification on St. Simons Island, Georgia, established by James Oglethorpe in 1736. It was built to defend the southern boundary of the Georgia colony and to monitor Spanish activity from Florida. The settlement included military works, barracks, houses, and commercial buildings.
The nearby Battle of Bloody Marsh in 1742 helped secure British control of the area, after which Frederica declined as a permanent military center.
