description Fort Clinch Overview
Fort Clinch is a masonry fort on Amelia Island at the mouth of the St. Marys River in northeastern Florida. Construction began in 1847 as part of the United States Third System of coastal defenses, intended to protect the deep-water port at Fernandina. The fort was never fully completed, but it became a military post during the Civil War and was occupied at different times by Confederate and Union forces.
Today it forms part of Fort Clinch State Park and is interpreted as a historic site.
