description Fort Pickens Overview
Fort Pickens is a nineteenth-century brick coastal fort on Santa Rosa Island, at the entrance to Pensacola Bay in Florida, United States. Built by the United States Army as part of the Third System of coastal defences, it worked with other forts to protect the bay and its naval facilities. During the Civil War, Fort Pickens remained under Union control while Confederate forces held nearby positions, and it is now part of Gulf Islands National Seashore.
