Fort Charles

description Fort Charles Overview

Fort Charles is a seventeenth-century English colonial fort at Port Royal, Jamaica, on the entrance to Kingston Harbour. It was built after England captured Jamaica from Spain in 1655 and formed part of the defences of Port Royal, a major Caribbean port during the period of English expansion. The fort is connected with the town's military and maritime history and remains an important surviving structure within the archaeological ensemble of seventeenth-century Port Royal.
