description Jaffna Fort Overview
Jaffna Fort is a large star-shaped fortification on the Jaffna Peninsula in northern Sri Lanka. The Portuguese began constructing it in 1618, and the Dutch captured and enlarged it in 1658 before British control began in 1795. Built around a central fortified area with angular bastions and a surrounding moat, the fort occupies a strategic position near the Jaffna Lagoon and has been affected by damage during Sri Lanka's civil war.
