description Fort Rotterdam Overview
Fort Rotterdam is a historic fortress on the waterfront of Makassar in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It developed from a fortification of the Gowa Kingdom, known as Jumpandang or Ujung Pandang, which the Dutch took after the 1667 Treaty of Bungaya. The Dutch rebuilt and expanded the site in European-style masonry and used it as a military, administrative, and trading center. The complex now serves as a cultural heritage site and contains the La Galigo Museum.
