Germa Oasis

The Garamantes were an ancient Saharan civilization centered in the Fezzan region of Libya, with their capital at Germa (also called Garama). They controlled trans-Saharan trade routes and built an urban society in the desert from roughly 500 BCE to around 700 CE.

Foggaras are gently sloping underground tunnels that tap into groundwater aquifers and deliver it to surface settlements by gravity, minimizing evaporation in the extreme desert heat. The Garamantes constructed vast networks of these canals around Germa, enabling sustained agriculture in one of the world's driest environments.

Germa is located in the Fezzan region of southwestern Libya, deep within the Sahara Desert. The ancient Garamantian capital sat amid a series of oases that supported one of the most important urban civilizations of the ancient Sahara.

Scholars link the decline to the gradual depletion of the groundwater that fed the foggara irrigation networks, combined with shifts in trans-Saharan trade routes. Environmental deterioration and changing regional political dynamics contributed to the civilization's collapse by roughly 700 CE.
