The greater rhea is a large, flightless bird native to open habitats in eastern and central South America. It is the largest of the two living rhea species and is related to other flightless birds in the ratite group, including ostriches and emus. Greater rheas have long legs, a long neck, and broad wings that cannot support powered flight, and they feed mainly on plants, seeds, and small animals.
