description Helmand Overview

The Helmand River is the longest river in Afghanistan. It rises in the central Hindu Kush and flows southwest for roughly 1,100 kilometers through Afghanistan before reaching the Sistan Basin, where its water ends in a system of wetlands and lakes rather than the sea. The river is important for irrigation and hydropower, and its flow is shared politically by Afghanistan and Iran.
