Hylaeus facilis

Hylaeus facilis is a species of solitary bee historically found across several islands in the Hawaiian archipelago, including Oahu and Molokai. However, it has experienced severe population declines over the last century. Today, it is considered incredibly rare and is largely restricted to a few specific habitats.

The primary threats to Hylaeus facilis include habitat loss due to human development and the proliferation of invasive ant species in Hawaii. Invasive plants also crowd out the native coastal vegetation that these bees rely on for nectar and pollen. Because they are solitary and nest in tiny stems or crevices, they are highly vulnerable to these environmental shifts.

The Hylaeus facilis bee belongs to the Colletidae family, which are commonly referred to as plasterer or cellophane bees. They are the only native bees in Hawaii and are crucial pollinators for indigenous plants. Unlike honeybees, they do not build hives or produce wax.

Hylaeus facilis gets its common name from the distinct yellow or white markings found on the faces of the males. These small, often dark-colored bees are easily overlooked because they look more like tiny wasps than traditional bees. The facial markings are a key identification trait for scientists tracking the different species within the genus.
