Jackson Square Historic District

The historic district is located in the iconic French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, centered directly around the historic Jackson Square park. It sits along the banks of the Mississippi River, serving as the geographical and cultural heart of the city.

The St. Louis Cathedral, with its distinctive triple steeples, is the most recognizable landmark anchoring the square. It is the oldest continuously active Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States, originally built in the late 1700s following a devastating fire.

The park was renamed in 1815 to honor Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, and features a prominent bronze equestrian statue of him at its center. Prior to the rename, the area was known as the Place d'Armes during the French and Spanish colonial periods.

The district features a rich blend of architectural styles, including Spanish Colonial, French Creole, and early American designs. Key structures like the Cabildo and the Presbytère showcase stunning Spanish colonial architecture with wrought-iron balconies and stucco facades.
