description James Byrnes Overview

James Francis Byrnes was an American lawyer and politician who served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1941 to 1942. He resigned from the Court during World War II to direct the Office of Economic Stabilization and later the Office of War Mobilization. Byrnes then served as U.S.

secretary of state under President Harry S. Truman from 1945 to 1947 and as governor of South Carolina.
