Edward Sanford was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1923 until his death in 1930. He wrote the majority opinion in Gitlow v. New York, decided in 1925, which treated freedom of speech and freedom of the press as protections applicable to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. His tenure covered a period when the Court was beginning to apply parts of the Bill of Rights to state governments.
