Sherman Minton was an American lawyer, Democratic senator from Indiana, and associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. Harry S. Truman appointed him to the Court, where he served from 12 October 1949 to 15 October 1956 after earlier serving on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Minton favored judicial restraint and often deferred to the legislative and executive branches, including in national-security and immigration cases such as Knauff v.
Shaughnessy, while also supporting civil-rights protections.
