Harold Hitz Burton was an American lawyer and Republican politician who served as mayor of Cleveland, a US senator from Ohio, and an associate justice of the Supreme Court. President Harry S. Truman nominated him to the Court in 1945, and Burton served from October 1945 until his retirement in October 1958. His judicial work included participation in Brown versus Board of Education and an opinion holding racial segregation in railroad dining cars unlawful.
