James F. Byrnes was an American lawyer and Democratic politician who served briefly as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him to the Court in 1941, but Byrnes resigned in 1942 to direct wartime economic mobilization.

He later became United States secretary of state and played a major role in postwar American foreign policy.
