John McDouall Stuart

description John McDouall Stuart Overview

John McDouall Stuart was a Scottish-born explorer whose expeditions mapped large areas of inland Australia during the nineteenth century. In 1862 he and his party completed the first successful European crossing of the continent through its interior from south to north and returned by the same general route. His observations helped establish a practical corridor between Adelaide and Australia's northern coast. That corridor later influenced the route selected for the Australian Overland Telegraph Line.
