Julie Gerberding is an American infectious disease physician who served as the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2002 to 2009. As the first woman to lead the agency, she managed the U.S. public health response to global threats, including SARS, avian influenza, and natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina. Her early tenure was heavily focused on bioterrorism preparedness and emergency response following the 9/11 attacks and subsequent anthrax incidents.

Following her government service, she entered the private sector to lead vaccine initiatives at Merck & Co.
