Karakum Desert

description Karakum Desert Overview

The Karakum Desert is a vast arid region in Central Asia that covers approximately 350,000 square kilometers, dominating the landscape of Turkmenistan. Its terrain consists largely of sand dunes, clay plains, and sparse desert vegetation adapted to the extreme temperature fluctuations. The desert contains significant energy resources and is the location of the Darvaza gas crater, a collapsed natural gas field that has been burning continuously since 1971. The area is also traversed by the Kara-Kum Canal, a major irrigation project.

help Karakum Desert FAQ

How much of Turkmenistan is covered by the Karakum Desert?

The Karakum covers roughly 350,000 square kilometers and occupies most of Turkmenistan. Its name is commonly translated from Turkic languages as "black sand."

Is the Darvaza gas crater naturally occurring?

The burning Darvaza crater is associated with Soviet-era gas exploration rather than being a natural volcanic crater. It lies within the Karakum and is widely nicknamed the "Door to Hell."

What is the Karakum Canal used for?

The Karakum Canal carries water from the Amu Darya across Turkmenistan for irrigation and urban supply. It made large-scale agriculture possible in dry areas, but water loss and environmental effects remain serious concerns.

Do people and wildlife live in the Karakum Desert?

Yes, settlements, pastoral communities, and transport routes cross the desert despite its low rainfall and extreme temperatures. Wildlife includes goitered gazelles, desert reptiles, rodents, and other species adapted to arid Central Asia.
