Kyoto Shogi

description Kyoto Shogi Overview

Kyoto shogi is a compact Japanese chess variant played on a 5 by 5 board with a reduced set of pieces. Except for the king, a piece changes to the piece type shown on its reverse side after it moves, so the same physical piece alternates between two movement patterns. The game is intended for players who know shogi concepts such as captures and piece drops but want a smaller board and a different promotion mechanism.
