Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked Central Asian country bordered by Kazakhstan, China, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, with Bishkek as its capital. The Tian Shan range covers most of its territory, and Issyk-Kul, one of the world's largest alpine lakes, sits at about 1,600 meters elevation. The Kyrgyz have a historically nomadic pastoral culture, reflected in the yurt dwelling and in the Epic of Manas, a major oral poem. A former Soviet republic, it became independent in 1991.
