description Lesser Scaup Overview

The lesser scaup, Aythya affinis, is a North American diving duck that breeds in northern parts of the continent and migrates to the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It gathers on lakes, reservoirs, wetlands, and estuaries, often in large flocks, and feeds by diving for aquatic invertebrates and plants. Breeding males are black and white, while females are brown, and the species is noted for its small peaked head.
