Manuel Marulanda Vélez was a Colombian Marxist guerrilla leader whose real name was Pedro Antonio Marín. Known by the nickname Tirofijo, he helped found the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, in 1964 and remained its principal commander for decades. He was a central figure in Colombia's armed conflict and represented the organization's rural insurgent leadership.
