description Mentolat fumaroles Overview
The Mentolat fumaroles are volcanic gas vents associated with Volcán Mentolat on Magdalena Island in southern Chile. Volcán Mentolat is an ice-filled caldera about 6 km wide within a stratovolcano, and the fumaroles are surface expressions of heat and gases from that volcanic system. The site is relevant to volcanologists studying hydrothermal activity in the remote Patagonian Andes; a fumarole observation alone does not establish that an eruption is occurring.
