description Meroe Royal Cemeteries Overview

The Meroë Royal Cemeteries are groups of Kushite burial grounds near Bagrawiya in present-day Sudan, associated with the royal city of Meroë. More than 100 steep-sided pyramids and their adjoining funerary chapels were constructed for kings, queens, and other elites, principally from about 300 BC to AD 300. Their architecture combines indigenous Kushite practices with influences from Egypt and the Mediterranean world. The cemeteries form part of the UNESCO-listed Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroë.
