help Merv Oasis FAQ
Why does Ancient Merv contain several separate walled cities?
Merv's urban center repeatedly shifted as rulers, populations, and the Murghab River's water system changed. The archaeological park therefore preserves neighboring settlements from the Bronze Age through the Islamic and post-medieval periods.
When was Merv at its most powerful?
Merv became especially important under the Great Seljuks in the 11th and 12th centuries. Sultan Sanjar made it an imperial capital, and his surviving mausoleum is one of the site's major monuments.
What happened to Merv during the Mongol conquest?
Mongol forces captured and devastated the city in 1221. Accounts disagree dramatically about the number killed, but the conquest ended Merv's period as one of the great cities of the Islamic world.
What can visitors see at the Merv Oasis today?
Major remains include Erk Kala, Gyaur Kala, Sultan Kala, the Great Kyz Kala fortress, and the mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar. UNESCO inscribed Ancient Merv as a World Heritage Site in 1999.
