description Monica Wilson Overview
Monica Wilson (1908–1982) was a South African social anthropologist whose ethnographic fieldwork among the Nyakyusa people of present-day Tanzania produced landmark studies of ritual, kinship, and social organization. Educated at Cambridge and trained under Bronisław Malinowski, she held academic positions at several South African universities and conducted comparative research on social change in southern Africa. Her works, including "Good Company" (1951) and "Rituals of Kinship among the Nyakyusa" (1957), examined how rituals expressed and maintained social values, and she wrote critically about the effects of racial segregation on African communities.
