Moro Blood Orange

The Moro blood orange is an Italian citrus variety originating in Sicily, known for producing the deepest, most intense burgundy flesh of any blood orange. This dark pigmentation is caused by very high levels of anthocyanins, the same antioxidants found in blueberries.

Moro blood oranges have a distinct, sweet flavor with strong raspberry and strawberry notes that distinguish them from standard oranges. They are generally less acidic than other oranges and have a highly aromatic, complex taste profile.

Moro blood oranges are an early-to-mid season variety, typically available from late December through March. They require cold nights during their growing period for the fruit to develop its signature deep red pigment.

The Moro blood orange originated in Sicily, Italy, specifically in the lush citrus groves near Mount Etna. The dramatic temperature drops at night in this volcanic region are what trigger the intense coloration of the fruit.
