description Mottled umber moth Overview
The mottled umber moth, Erannis defoliaria, is a geometrid moth found across Europe and in parts of western Asia. Its males are winged and variable in brown coloration, whereas the females are completely wingless and climb tree trunks after emerging in autumn, usually from October into winter. The larvae appear in spring and feed on the foliage of broad-leaved trees and shrubs, including oak, birch, hazel, hawthorn, and apple, where abundant populations can cause defoliation.
