Nazca Flamingo

The Nazca Flamingo is located in the Nazca Desert of southern Peru, within the UNESCO World Heritage Nazca Lines archaeological complex. The geoglyph stretches over 300 meters across the desert surface, making it one of the longest bird figures documented at the site.

The Nazca Lines, including the Flamingo, are estimated to have been created between approximately 500 BCE and 500 CE by the Nazca culture. The German mathematician and archaeologist Maria Reiche devoted decades of her career, beginning in the 1940s, to mapping and preserving these geoglyphs.

The geoglyph depicts a long-necked wading bird resembling the Andean flamingo, a species that inhabits high-altitude salt lakes in present-day Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. The figure likely held ritual significance related to water and fertility, as flamingos are associated with the rare lakes and wetlands that were vital resources in the arid Nazca environment.

The Nazca Flamingo, like most figural geoglyphs at Nazca, is virtually impossible to discern from ground level because its enormous scale of over 300 meters distorts the figure when viewed from within. It is best observed from the air, and tourists typically take light aircraft flights from the nearby city of Nazca to view the geoglyphs.
