Paddle-tailed Darner

The Paddle-tailed Darner gets its name from the uniquely shaped, paddle-like abdominal appendages found on the male of the species. These distinct claspers are used during mating and serve as a key identification feature.

This dragonfly species is native to western North America, thriving in regions from the Pacific Northwest up through Canada and into Alaska. They are typically found patrolling around ponds, lakes, and marshes.

Like most darner dragonflies, they are primarily active during the warmer months, generally taking flight from late spring through early fall. They are strong, agile fliers that hunt other insects on the wing.

To identify a male Paddle-tailed Darner, an observer must look closely at the very end of its abdomen to spot the specialized, flattened appendages. While their blue and green markings are similar to other darners, the paddle shape is a distinct giveaway.
