description Procreate (App) Overview
Created for iPad, Procreate provides a digital workspace for illustration and painting. Artists can develop sketches into finished images using brushes and a layer system that separates parts of a composition. Apple Pencil support makes direct drawing on the screen central to the experience, with the tablet acting as both the canvas and the working surface. Its fit extends from casual sketching to professional illustration and concept work.
Layers are particularly useful when a drawing needs revision, because a background or painted element can be adjusted without changing the entire image. The app's defining appeal is a broad drawing toolkit presented around touch and stylus interaction on a portable device. It suits artists who prefer working directly on their artwork rather than using a separate pen tablet and monitor. The depth of a project still depends on the artist's workflow and the iPad being used.
help Procreate (App) FAQ
Does Procreate require a monthly subscription?
Procreate is a completely one-time purchase in the Apple App Store, currently priced at $12.99 for the iPad version. There are no hidden subscription fees, and all future updates to the illustration app are included entirely for free.
Do you need an Apple Pencil to use Procreate?
While you can technically use your fingers or third-party styluses to draw in the app, the Apple Pencil is highly recommended. The app's brush engine relies heavily on the Apple Pencil's pressure and tilt sensitivity to create dynamic, realistic strokes.
Is there a version of Procreate for the iPhone?
Yes, there is a standalone, optimized version of the app called Procreate Pocket designed specifically for the iPhone. Because it is a separate application, you do have to purchase it separately from the App Store.
